VMware Workstation Virtual Image Installation

MindTouch Deki Virtual Appliance is VMWare Certified

While the Mindtouch Deki virtual appliance will run on any available VMWare virtualization software, due to restrictions placed upon other products MindTouch recommends the use of VMWare Workstation 6 (http://vmware.com/products/ws).

Download the VMWare Certified image

The MindTouch Deki image zip file can be downloaded here: VMWare-Certified MindTouch Deki Image

Extract the contents to your virtual machine directory (by default, the Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003 virtual machine directory is C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Virtual Machines; the Vista default location is C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Virtual Machines).

Start the MindTouch Deki virtual appliance

Start VMWare Workstation. Click File, and select Open. Browse to the location of the unzipped image files, and locate the file called "MindTouch_Deki_Wiki_Kilen_Woods_8.08.1_VM.vmx". Select it, and click Open. The virtual machine should open in the summary page.

To include the virtual machine in the "Favorites" folder (recommended), right-click the MindTouch_Deki_Wiki_Kilen_Woods_8.08.1_VM tab at the top of the summary screen and select "Add to Favorites".

To start the virtual machine, click the green "Play" button (or click VM, select Power, and then click Power On). The virtual machine will start to boot.

Configure the virtual appliance

After the machine has booted, the console will display an IP address retrieved through DHCP. You can begin using the wiki immediately by opening a web browser and typing http://<displayed_ip_address> but some changes to the virtual machine will be necessary to ensure security and availability should the host machine be rebooted.

Change the default password

From the console (shell), log into the virtual machine using root for the username, and password for the password. For security purposes, MindTouch HIGHLY recommends changing the password after initial login by typing passwd root, pressing Enter, and typing in a new password.

Change the IP address

To ensure that the IP address of the virtual appliance does not change and render it inaccessible from the web, a static IP address will need to be assigned (you may want to contact your IT department to make this change or to receive an open IP address and network information). After logging in to the console in Workstation, access the IP configuration by typing vi /etc/network/interfaces and pressing enter. Using the arrow keys, scroll down to the IP address information, and hit I to enter into edit mode. Change the information to match your environment, then hit Esc to drop into view mode. Type :wq and press Enter to exit the setup page. Type reboot to reboot the machine, and at this point it should be fully accessible via your web browser at http://<your_new_IP_address>.

Congratulations! At this point, MindTouch Deki is now fully installed and ready for use. Please note that the a user needs to be logged in and that the host computer, VMWare Workstation, and the virtual machine all have to be running for MindTouch Deki to be accessible from the web. If you need permanent availability without having a user logged in, consider installing VMWare Server or using VMWare's ESX 3.x Virtual Infrastructure.
